These contractors wanted to give back to their communities, and they did so in the best way they knew how – roofing!

Home improvements are big investments that often get put on the backburner because of more urgent needs. It can be hard to get to these crucial repairs and replacements, especially with the costs. But there are many roofing companies and programs dedicated to helping those struggling with these costs get the support they need. These three stories highlight how communities can pull together to help those facing hardship and keep them safe and dry.

1 – Rhino-Back Roofing and the Sherwoods

Gary and Laura Sherwood felt like they won the lottery when they received a new roof for free. Their year has been filled with health struggles that left them without the resources to repair the roof that protected their home. Laura told NBC Conneticut, “It is unbelievable, a dream come true.”

The roof was donated through a partnership between the local contractor Rhino-Back Roofing and the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. In addition to completely redoing the Sherwood’s roof, they were able to work on the home’s siding, paint and landscaping. When asked about it, owner Mike Trouern-Trend simply said, “It is important for them to realize that people do care. There is a group of people that realize there were huge sacrifices made by them for our country. I think it is the least we could do.”

2 – JP Roofing & Metal Buildings and Shawn Schibik

Shawn Schibik, a veteran of both the U.S. Air Force and Army, knew he needed a new roof, but was getting caught in the cycle of having to settle for repairs over and over again. He told CBS News, “I tried to get it fixed, I wanted to do the whole roof but I couldn't get funding for it with the condition it was in until it got fixed, so it's kind of like you need money to get it fixed, and then you can't get the money.” Fixing the entire roof seemed like an impossible battle, but his community wasn’t about to let him fight alone.

In partnership with Owens Corning's Roof Deployment Program, JP Roofing & Metal Buildings came in to reinforce Shawn’s roof. With the Owens Corning program providing materials, the local contracting company was able to put an entirely new roof on Shawn’s house. All Shawn could say was, “I'm just super grateful.”

Joseph Potochnick, the owner of JP Roofing & Metal Buildings, explained his motivations, “It's important to give back to the veterans. We want to welcome them home; this is our way of giving back.” And he has big plans to continue helping veterans like Shawn, saying “We've done five this year and we're going to be doing maybe one more and continuing on for years to come.”

3 – M&M Roofing and the Guevara family

The Guevara Family in East Texas want to rest easy and focus on their kids, not worry about their roof anymore. Thanks to M&M Roofing’s Roofus Giveaway and ABC Supply, they don’t have to worry anymore!

This giveaway is M&M Roofing’s way of supporting and giving back to their local community. Emily May, owner of M&M Roofing, told The Lufkin Daily News “At M&M Roofing, we believe in the importance of supporting our community, and the Roofus Roof Giveaway is our way of giving back to the wonderful people of East Texas. We are thrilled to have collaborated with ABC Supply to provide the Guevara Family with a new roof that will bring safety, security and peace of mind to their home.”

For the Guevara Family that support looks like a new roof valued over $11,000. They explained, “We are incredibly grateful to M&M Roofing and ABC Supply for this generous gift. This new roof means the world to us and ensures the protection of our home for years to come.”
