This program recognizes low- and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects from across North America.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announced the winning projects in the 2021 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards.

This program recognizes low and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects from across North America based on four categories: Reasons for Selecting Asphalt, Performance, Beauty and Distinction.

“We received 93 submissions this year, making it another record-breaking year,” said Reed Hitchcock, ARMA’s Executive Vice President. “We continue to be impressed by the caliber of the submissions. Roofing contractors across North America are overwhelmingly choosing asphalt roofing for their projects, highlighting asphalt’s versatility, beauty, performance and durability.”

This year’s Gold Award was presented to West Michigan Roofing & Construction for Henderson Castle, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. West Michigan Roofing & Construction removed this castle’s original slate by hand, leaving the original slate in only one roof area, the round spire. The balance of the roof was replaced with GAF Slateline™ asphalt shingles to blend with the look of the original slate, making the roof water-resistant. This is a roof system that will stand the test of time; the durable asphalt roofing will protect this project for years to come.

Elite Roofing was awarded Silver for their work on The Castle. Originally built in 1892, The Castle is a century-old home located in the heart of downtown Denver, Colorado. It has a distinct roof, due to the castle-like spires. This roof had experienced severe wind and hail damage, along with rusted custom metalwork along the roof ridges. Because of the steep pitch and skyline visibility, asphalt was the best solution. The shingle style and color also matched the requirements necessary to preserve the historical appearance of this home. Elite Roofing chose GAF Camelot® II asphalt shingles for this project.

The Bronze Award was presented to Wedge Roofing for the Hardy Residence of Dillion Beach, California, which utilized a GAF Timberline® HD roofing system. This intricate puzzle of a project consists of two conjoined geodesic domes, which can present a myriad of challenges to even the most experienced and skilled roofing contractor. In total there were 94 individual roof sections, each needing to be meticulously integrated with its surrounding puzzle pieces.

Additionally, three projects were recognized as Honorable Mentions.

Weitzman Office by Nations Renovations in Dallas, Texas received an Honorable Mention. The 7-story office building needed a portion of its 15-year-old roof replaced due to water stains and deterioration. In addition, due to the amount of mechanical equipment on the roof, there was constant foot traffic. A heat-applied modified bitumen system went over the existing modified roof to provide an economical, striking, and sustainable solution for the owner. This 2 ply modified system, accomplished with Polyglass products, is significantly stronger and by installing a red cap sheet for walk pads there is now a clear path for roof accessibility.

Advanced Roofing Inc. received an Honorable Mention for re-roofing Atlantic Technical College, Arthur Ashe Jr. Campus while developing mechanical solutions for working in a school environment, adhering to inspection procedures, and shutting down due to a hurricane. SOPREMA roofing materials were utilized for this project. Their new asphalt roof improves the energy efficiency of the building design and improves the aesthetic of the building with the clean white granular cap sheet.

Jefferson Terrace Elementary School, a 44 million dollar school that opened in 2020, garnered an Honorable Mention for Roofing Solutions LLC. They installed all roofing and wall panels at this new construction school in Baton Rouge, and the low-slope roof design on this building allows the visual focus to be on the colorful wall panels along the exterior. This creates a warm welcome to the elementary school students. This project illustrates how asphalt roofing can be versatile, durable and aesthetically pleasing while protecting the structure from the severe weather and heavy rain of the Gulf South. SOPREMA roofing products were utilized for this submission.
