A look behind the journey of Gene Fowler, the founder who built a Midwest mainstay in commercial roofing. 

For Gene Fowler, founder of Sentry Roofing, Inc., building a thriving business wasn’t about following a roadmap; it was about creating his own path in a highly competitive industry. Now, four decades later, Sentry Roofing stands as a trusted name in commercial roofing, built on principles of honesty, quality and community commitment. As the company marks its 40th anniversary, Gene shares the challenges, triumphs and values that have shaped his journey from small-town beginnings to a Midwest mainstay. 

How it all started 

Gene Fowler’s entry into the roofing business wasn’t something he planned. In 1983, he began working in sales for Bullock Weatherlock, a home improvement company. When the company closed its division in 1984, Gene, along with two colleagues, decided to start their own business — Sentry Design & Construction, focusing initially on residential remodeling. 

By 1986, Gene took full ownership of the company. “We didn’t have any financing and I had only worked in sales before becoming the sole owner,” Gene says. “But I took over, worked hard to pay down debt and things started to improve.” 

The partnership with Duro-Last in 1987 was a turning point. By 1990, Sentry Roofing had shifted its focus entirely to commercial roofing, specializing in Duro-Last’s products. 

A simple approach to business 

Sentry Roofing’s success over the years has been built on straightforward principles: honesty, quality workmanship and thinking long-term. Gene’s approach to business is about doing what’s best for both clients and employees, even if it means not taking the easiest path. 

“Our company values doing things the right way,” Gene explains. “We’re committed to being honest, making sure our work is top-notch and treating everyone with respect.” 

This focus on doing the job right has earned Sentry Roofing a strong reputation. From the first meeting with a customer to the final inspection, Sentry Roofing makes sure that the client is satisfied with the work done. 

Facing challenges and growing 

The roofing industry is one with deep roots, with many practices remaining unchanged over the years. While new technologies have made some processes easier, Gene is careful about adopting new methods without thorough consideration. 

“We stick to what works and only make changes when they fit with our values and goals,” Gene says. This approach has allowed Sentry Roofing to grow steadily without losing sight of the core values that have guided the company for 40 years. 

Gene reflects on the early challenges of running a business, especially when he became the sole owner. “We didn’t have much money and I had to learn how to run and grow the business,” he recalls. “But through hard work and faith, we managed to succeed and transition into commercial roofing.” 

Family and community 

Family plays a key role at Sentry Roofing. Gene’s sons, Daniel and Tim and his sons-in-law, Brian and Chris, are all part of the company. “Family is very important to me,” Gene shares. “It’s a privilege to work alongside my sons and sons-in-law and see how dedicated they are to the business.” 

This sense of family extends to the company’s clients and the community. Gene sees his clients as an extension of his own family and is involved in various charitable organizations, including his church and the Women’s Care Clinic. 

Looking to the future 

As Sentry Roofing celebrates 40 years in business, Gene looks forward to the future with optimism. He hopes to see continued growth while maintaining the company’s commitment to quality and customer service. A significant goal is to eventually pass the business on to his sons and sons-in-law. 

“I’ve enjoyed coming to work every day for the past 40 years,” Gene reflects. “As we look to the future, I’m excited about the growth of the company and eventually handing it over to the next generation.” 

Built on trust 

Sentry Roofing’s success is based on trust — trust in their work, in their values and in the relationships they’ve built with clients. Gene is proud of what the company has accomplished, from thousands of satisfied clients to a team of skilled and dedicated professionals. 

“We don’t worry about our competitors; we focus on our clients,” Gene says. “Our goal has always been to provide the best possible service at a fair price and to take care of our customers even after the job is done.”
