Selecting the best standing seam roof for a home requires careful consideration as there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach.

If you’re wanting to boost your home’s appearance and make it stand out in the neighborhood, a metal roof might be the right choice for you. There are many factors to consider though to ensure you select the best standing seam roof for your home such as roof geometry, substrate and the overall look you want to achieve. A metal roof has the potential to boost your home's overall appearance and create a strong visual impact within your neighborhood. Metal Sales has you covered with a complete guide to choosing the right standing seam metal roof.

How to choose your panels

While several factors determine which type of panel you should choose for your standing seam roof, you’ll need to know the available options. Standing seam panels are available in four different types of locking mechanisms that go as follows:

Snap-lock: Male and female corresponding panels snap together over a clip that is secured to the substructure.

Mechanical seam: Uses pressure to roll-form two panels together over a clip in a crimping fashion seal.

Batten panel: Two panels are secured through with a clip and fitted with a batten cap to seal.

Fastener flange: A male and female panel snap together and are then fastened in place with a fastener strip.

A notable feature of metal roofing panels is the ribbing seen from the curb. Rib heights generally range from 1 to 3 inches, and the size of the ribs helps determine the roof’s water tightness. Though how they all fit together also has a lot to do with the seal as well.

Ribbing is a distinguishable feature of metal roofing. The higher the seam, the better the seal, but the more notable it becomes. Panel widths range in size between 12 and 18 inches, but the shape of your roof will help determine your proper width, which also affects ribbing.

While locking mechanisms and ribs are important features, another aspect of standing seam roofs is the thickness of the paneling. Standing seam metal panels range in gauge size from 26 to 24 (the lower the number, the thicker the steel gets) Your climate and substructure will play a critical role in your choice here. Consult your metal roofing contractor on this factor.

Achievable aesthetics

Metal roofing materials are naturally more durable than traditional asphalt shingle options. However, an even bigger draw is their visual effect. A standing seam metal roof offers your residential or commercial property a sleek and modern look.

Many residential property owners are choosing to accent their homes with the beautiful features of a metal roof. Even if you opt not to do an entire roofing replacement with metal panels, you can accent a portion of your home with this design.

With so many color options available, your style choices are nearly endless. Enhancing your home’s colors will make a big difference in this area. Consider a darker shade for a bold look if you have a white stucco property. Still, you can choose to use a standing seam roof as an accent piece over a porch or draw a beautiful bay window to the attention.

Roof slope is critical

The type of panel or rib system to choose largely depends on your roof’s slope or pitch. The pitch of a roof must allow heavy weather like rain or snow to run off properly. Failure to achieve this flow increases the risk of water infiltration on a standing seam roofing system.

Low slope profile roofs are an option for pitches between 1:12 and 3:12. That means that over the course of 12 inches, your roof rises between one and 3 inches. A common standard within the standing seam roofing industry is a pitched slope of 3:12, allowing for proper runoff and decreasing the chance of roof degradation.

Consider roof geometry

While the slope of your roof is an essential factor when choosing a standing seam roof, so is the architecture of your home. Given that standing seam panels need proper sloping for water runoff, roofs with dead valleys can be a concerning factor in managing flow.

Suppose your roof has many penetration points, such as skylights or a chimney. In that case, you’ll need to speak with your contractors about achieving water tightness in these areas. Additional points of concern include vent pipes and hatches.

Specific roofing designs may also be better suited for standing seam roofs. Panels are held together either by locking clips or mechanical seals. Therefore, an advanced slope, like an A-frame home, may be prone to see slipping over the course of years.

Consider maintenance

Along with aesthetics and durability, standing seam roofing systems become an attractive option when you consider how long they last. Unlike traditional shingle roofs that need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years, a standing seam roof can often maintain performance for up to 50 years.

Like all roofing types, these superior materials do require some maintenance. Though maybe not as much as traditional asphalt shingle roofs. Depending on manufacturer recommendations, most maintenance can be achieved with soap and water. Still, other considerations include the following:

Debris removal: From time to time, you’ll need to ensure that any dead valley areas are free from leaves or branches that have landed here.

Scratch repair: While a metal roof can last a long time, if you notice scratches on your panels, those will need to be repaired. Failure to do so can lead to rust and deterioration.

Inspect flashings: If you see leaks, there’s a good chance your roof’s flashing has been damaged. These issues need to be addressed and repaired by a professional immediately.

Keeping these considerations in mind

Standing seam metal roofing can be an attractive option for residential or commercial property owners. The type of panel depends on a few factors, including your desired aesthetics, weather conditions and the shape of your roof.

The benefits of installing a standing seam roof are its inherently more durable material, long-lasting ability, and low maintenance effort. An experienced metal roofing contractor can help you select the correct type of panel and design to complement your property.
