Local organizations in Alabama honor the service of a veteran by supporting his family.

Specialist E-4 Rufus Battle was honorably discharged in 1966 after serving in the Army for six years. Specialist Battle, with his wife Patricia, made Phenix City, Alabama home until he passed away in 2002. Patricia still lives in their home, but her roof was in need of repair.

There were many people who came together to support Patricia, starting with the House of Heroes Chattahoochee Valley, a nonprofit based in Russell County, Alabama that assists military veterans and their spouses by repairing their homes for free.

The House of Heroes Chattahoochee Valley partnered with Alliance Specialty Contractor, Inc. (ASP) and Columbus Home Depot, who both participated to show their gratitude for the service of Specialist Battle. “We really respect and appreciate all of our military and that’s why we want to serve and give back,” Storm Damage Specialist at ASP Todd Quintard said to WBTW News. For some people, helping with this project was personal for them. “My husband is in the military, so I was glad to be a part of this project to help out our military veterans,” Office Administrator at ASP Suheily Nacua shared.

Along with the new roof, Patricia Battle was presented an American flag in an honor ceremony, at which the executive director for the House of Heroes Chattahoochee Valley, Susan Wood, spoke about Battle.

“Our mission is to honor our military veterans and spouses, and we do that by coming out to your house and doing repairs. And I want to say thank you for your service to our nation.”

After just one day of work, the Alliance Specialty Contractor, Inc. and the Columbus Home Depot had the project finished, and Patricia had a free new roof in honor of her husband.

“I’m overwhelmed. This is overwhelming to me,” Patricia shared. “I’m a giver, I’m so used to pouring out into other people’s lives. Until, when it comes back to me, which I was not expecting, it’s just overwhelming.”
