Wouldn’t it be great if you could ask a professional roofer for some solid advice? That’s what our “Contractor Insights” feature is all about. Down-to-earth answers to key questions that every homeowner should have before getting a new roof. This month we’re featuring Andrew Prchal, co-owner of Gunner Roofing out of Greenwich, Connecticut.
Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?
A: First of all, make up your wish list that includes everything that you want to have done related to your roofing project. Review that list with the contractor and ask if their team has the ability and skills to tackle the entire project. Then, if they can do the project, get a proposal in writing that includes their references. Ask for both past and current projects that are similar to your project. This way you can check out “apples to apples” projects. Finally, make sure to get copies of the roofer’s insurance paperwork and licenses. A reputable contractor will have no issue in providing these to you.
Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?
A: Composite roofing gives homeowners the best of both worlds. Authentic design paired with extreme durability, while also being easy to maintain. This allows homeowners more time to focus on things they enjoy rather than hassling with long-term roof upkeep.
Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?
A: Re-roofing a house is not a quiet activity. Due to the noise, consider scheduling an activity that takes you away from the house most of the day. There’s also lots going on during a roofing installation. Make sure to talk with your contractor beforehand about developing a plan to protect your landscaping and property. If you have any pieces that you value — anything from lawn furniture to a bird bath to decorative flag poles — you should plan to remove those items during the re-roofing period.
Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?
A: Select a contractor who is able to articulate the insurance process and can help with the claim process. You want someone on your side who is able to ensure you’re covered correctly in every way. Plus, when you’re working with the insurance adjuster, be clear in your communications with that person and set your expectations with him or her.
Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?
A: We like to align with companies that have solid reputations and quality products. DaVinci has a tried, true and tested product in the marketplace with unrivaled support and product warranties.
