Wish you could gather all the information you need about hiring a roofer really fast? We can help. Our “Contractor Insights” feature brings you quick responses to the questions every homeowner should know when looking for a new roof. This month we’re featuring roofing expert Jason Chase, Owner of JnJ Restoration in Evanston, Illinois.
Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?
A: You want to gain confidence in both the contractor you’re looking for and the product they’re recommending. So start by finding out if the contractor is licensed and insured. Next, determine if they’re certified for installation of the product you’re choosing. Finally, ask for recent project references specifically of the product being proposed for your roof.
Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?
A: If a hassle and maintenance-free roof sound good, then a composite roof is a great option. You can get the real look of slate or shake without the needed maintenance care or associated costs. Plus, many composites have a Class 4 impact rating and a Class A fire rating. This works in your favor to help protect your home and oftentimes gain a discount on your homeowners insurance. Personally, I’m so impressed with composite roofing that I replaced the roof on my own home with a DaVinci Select Shake roof. I was ready to trade in the hassles of the real cedar shake on my house for a maintenance-free roof.
Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?
A: Roofing can be a loud and messy business. Think about your young children, pets and yard access during the roof installation; you’re going to have to make alternative plans. Discuss in advance with your roofer about access to your driveway and garage, moving outdoor furniture, grills and decorations. Point out any prized landscaping so your roofer can take extra precaution to protect these items. Even consider covering things in your attic with large sheets or painters plastic drop clothes to protect them.
Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?
A: Document any damage immediately after a storm. Take pictures and videos. Then share this with the adjuster. Communicating with them, and realizing you’re not the only one impacted by the storm, is key. Pack your patience. Adjusters are the pros at explaining your policy details related to coverage, deductible, payments, etc., just plan to wait a bit if others in your area are also affected.
