If you need fast answers, by a professional roofer, then you’ve come to the right place. Our “Contractor Insights” feature brings you down-to-earth responses to key areas of roofing by experienced roofers across the country. Read on to gain insights this month from Mike Brennan, Owner of Brennan Exteriors out of Mukwonago, Wisconsin.
Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?
A: Start out by asking how long the company has been in business and if they’re locally-based. Next, ask very specifically about what type of workmanship warranty their company offers. This is different than the product warranty (which you should ask about also). Finally, find out if they are a certified contractor for the product that they install, along with having proper insurance for installation work.
Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?
A: Composite roofing is highly durable. It’s long-lasting and impact/hail resistant. Composite materials also repel mold and algae growth. All together, it’s a maintenance-free product.
Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?
A: Try to schedule the roofing work during the week, when you’re away from the house at work. Make sure to remove any interior wall hangings and items on shelves that might be impacted by vibrations from pounding on the roof. Know that the noise will only be for a few days, but it’s constant. So, consider boarding pets.
Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?
A: Be part of the process along with your local contractor and adjuster. It’s better to work together as a team rather than trying to tackle storm damage alone. Trust your certified contractor to work with your insurance adjuster. Have your contractor walk you through the insurance process and the roofing process from start to finish. Adjusters get very busy after a storm and might not have enough time to walk you through every step; that’s where your roofer can help out.
Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?
A: DaVinci has a long-standing record of providing a quality product. In addition, they have a variety of colors and styles that make them stand out from their competition. Most of our customers like the fact that DaVinci is a maintenance-free and cost effective product when compared to natural slate or real cedar wood shake roofs.
