Scott Kim of WGM Contracting offers key insights to homeowners dealing with storm damage.

Yesterday, your roof was fine. Last night a hail storm blew through leaving it severely dented. Now you are thrown into the search for a roofer. What are the key essentials you need to know? Our “Contractor Insights” feature gives you basic information from top roofers. This month we’re featuring ideas from Scott Kim, President of WGM Contracting, with headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.

Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?

A: Start by asking open-ended questions, so you get to know the company. You want to find out valuable information, such as about their license, insurance, warranty, materials, operations procedure, timing and protecting your landscaping. Ask these three questions and you should get some important answers.

  1. What can you tell us about your company?

  1. What kinds of benefits does your company offer us that overshadow other companies?

  1. What kind of assurance can we get when we hire your company?

Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?

A: Quite simply, composite roofing has all the best features other products do not. You get resistance to fire, impact, high winds, curling, splitting and breaking. Then there’s the resistance to insects and algae growth. All that makes for a low maintenance roof. Last, but not least, the life span of a composite roof is more than 50 years, whereas a traditional asphalt roof lasts only 20 to 30 years.

Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?

A: First, make sure the roofing contractor has a plan and takes special precautions to protect your landscaping, fragile plants and garden areas. Second, be relentless about having the roofer use a magnetic nail sweeper every day around your driveway and yard to remove nails that could injure a child or puncture a car tire. Third, insist on a final walk-through with the contractor/roofer to check the quality of the overall project. At this time you can also identify any damage that may have been caused by the installation to landscaping, gutters or other areas.

Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?

A: Be honest. Insurance adjusters are trained inspectors. Never provide false evidence; and never depend on contractors to handle the claim fully. The more truthful you are with the adjuster, and the more you work with them, the more likely they will help you get what you want and deserve.

Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?

A: Quite simply, because of the exceptional benefits to the homeowner. The DaVinci Roofscapes product offers durability, longevity and pricing that are unbeatable. Their test results are stunning: Class A fire rated, Class 4 impact rated, wind test certified to 110 mph. These all surpass natural wood shingles and slate tiles in every aspect. Moreover, DaVinci tiles are made from virgin resins, unlike most other manufacturers who use recycled resin content which can shorten the lifespan of the roofing tiles.
