When you’re researching a roofing project, you need straight answers. That’s why our “Contractor Insights” feature provides monthly guidance from leaders in the building and remodeling industry… to help make your life easier. This month, Sean Irwin, owner of Irwin Build, offers his insights on roofing.
A leading Bucks County, Pennsylvania design-build firm, Irwin Build operates as a subsidiary of Mark Irwin Associates Inc. They specialize in all aspects of residential and commercial remodeling and renovation projects, including giving expert advice on roofing projects.
Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?
A: Start by asking what type of materials the roofer recommends for your roof and why they suggest those materials. Then, ask for references (or examples) of their past completed work — and check them out! Finally, make sure to find out what type of warranty the roofer provides on their installation work and (separately) what type of warranty comes from the manufacturer on the materials that are being installed.
Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?
A: Composite roofing offers three key main advantages to a homeowner: durability, longevity and low maintenance.
Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?
A: Start by preparing your yard. Remove any items you can (or allow the roofing team to remove them) that you want to protect, like outdoor furniture, landscape pieces and yard art. Then, on the inside of your home, remove valuable items hanging on the wall. There’s a chance they could fall, so it’s best to remove them temporarily.
Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?
A: You need to understand the building codes for roofing in your area. Plus, make sure to know the age of your current roofing shingles. Older roofs tend to be more difficult to match up with replacement shingles, so spot repairs are more difficult. Keep this in mind when dealing with an adjuster who is talking about a fix versus replacement.
Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?
A: At Irwin Build, we want to be associated with the best products available for our clients. Our goal is to deliver our customers a product that has lasting value and performance while also enhancing their property value. DaVinci meets this goal on all levels.
