Start your autumn roof maintenance with checking your roof and gutters before the cold weather hits!

We may still be having sizzling summer weather, but it's not too early to get your home's exterior ready for autumn. As a bonus, the regular maintenance you do now on your home adds to its curb appeal and means less work when the weather turns colder. Start with your roof and gutters. Before your beautiful oak and maple trees shed their leaves, check out the condition of these important areas of your home exterior. Or, if your roof is too steep, hire a professional roofer to come out and evaluate your roof.

Tips for autumn check-ups

Begin by looking for problem areas on your roof, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roofing tiles that may be “flapping” in the wind. These are indications that roof repairs or a new roof may be in your future. To get the best view of your roof, use either a ladder or find a higher spot across the street and use binoculars to view your roof.

Next, check out your gutters. Too many homeowners underestimate the importance of the gutter system on their home. Several times a year you should make sure your gutters are clean, unclogged, securely attached to your home and remain sloped for proper drainage.

Check to make sure the water running off the roof doesn’t cause damage to your building's structure, landscaping or property below the roof. And, if you have asphalt shingles, watch for granules coming into the gutters and spouts. That’s a big sign that your roof is losing its effectiveness.

Next steps

If you do see problems, reach out to your local roofer and discuss your options for repair or replacement. One of the most cost-effective investments for a new roof is composite slate or shake. Easy-to-maintain, these roofs are made to last. Some manufacturers, like DaVinci Roofscapes, offer a Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on their synthetic roofs. In addition, you may be able to get a hefty yearly discount on your homeowner’s insurance with a polymer roof. Because these roofs are Class A fire and Class 4 impact rated, insurance companies are known to offer up to 20% off on yearly rates.

There are even more reasons why investing in a realistic-looking composite roof may be a smart move for you this year. Check out these articles for more information!
