Q & A - Is there another kind of roof gutter?

Mamie from Virginia asks, "Is there another kind of roof gutter?"

My roof has an opening that has exposed beams and a gutter is not an option. How can I stop the rain from my roof hitting me?

I have a photo that fixes the problem, I hope it helps. Most of us roofers call it a rain diverter. It stops the majority of the water from the rain from pouring off the roof by diverting away from the opening.

It tucks under the second or third to last course of shingles. Slanting it one way or the other will direct the flow of water. I try to equal the flow having both sides drain, as shown in the photo. Try to have the diverter about a foot longer on each side of the opening to move the water far enough away from the opening of the roof.
