This week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the time of year to get your home ready for the upcoming hurricane season.

Arlene. Bret. Cindy. They’ll soon come knocking on our doors. These are the first three names of Atlantic Basin hurricanes in the 2023 Hurricane Season.

However, before the first storm hits, take time right now, during National Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 1-7, 2023) to get your house ready for severe weather. This is the time to evaluate your roof and other areas of your home to assure they’re prepared to stand up to Mother Nature’s fury.

2023 scary weather

Already this year an unprecedented number of tornados have torn through our country. These follow the incredible amounts of snowfall and now flooding conditions in the Western states. High winds have also been a challenge for many homeowners.

In all these cases, your roof takes the brunt of these weather conditions. Before hurricane season starts, get a good look at the status of your roof — or hire a professional roofer to do an evaluation.

Up on the roof

Starting from the top of the home down, make sure your roofing tiles are secure and can sustain both straight line and pressurized winds during a hurricane. Severe winds can uplift shingles off a roof, push intense wind-driven rain at a roof, or cause flying debris to strike a roof.

If you find it’s time to replace your roof, get bids on the process from several professional roofers. Check their references, and follow this checklist to assure you are hiring a reputable roofer.

Roofing that laughs at mother nature

When it comes time to choose a shake or slate replacement roofing material, the smart decision is to select a composite roof product that meets Class 4 ratings for impact resistance along with the Miami Dade County Acceptance (High Velocity Hurricane Winds) and the Texas Department of Insurance. Composite synthetic shake and slate roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes meet these criteria and can withstand strong hurricane-force winds and impact from blowing debris.

In addition, DaVinci composite roofing tiles are rated Class A for fire retardance and have achieved the highest rating for straight line wind testing at 110 mph. The synthetic roofing material also has a lifetime limited material warranty to give you added peace-of-mind.

Before the onset of Hurricane Season 2023, take time to evaluate the structures where you live and work — especially the roofs. All indications are that we may meet Tammy, Vince and Whitney on the lower end of the naming scale for hurricanes this year. So make it a priority right now to invest in changes that can prepare you, your family and your home to successfully weather upcoming storms.
