Marine Veteran Now Has Even More to be Thankful For

Marine veteran receives a new roof just days after Thanksgiving. 

“The Housing Assistance Council says more than 80% of Michigan veterans own homes. Nearly 83,000 of those veterans live in homes with one or more major repair problems,” according to Fox2Detroit. 

Don Maurer, a marine veteran, was just a number. 

That is, until Owens Corning and Habitat for Humanity of Western Wayne came to help. 

Don’s home is located in Belleville, Michigan and was in desperate need of a new roof. There were plenty of leaks and rotten wood, that when contractors began the project, they were amazed that the damage wasn’t worse. Thankfully, Owens Corning and Habitat for Humanity gifted him a new roof days after Thanksgiving. 

"It’s surprising they didn’t have any damage inside yet. I’d bet this winter, in the spring, he would have had when the snow melted, some pretty good size problems," Tom Meadows said. Tom, a member of Neighborhood Roofing, felt like this was more than just a job, it was a chance to connect and give back to one of our country’s heroes. 

"Don’s a really nice guy. I got to meet him when I first came over," Tom said. "Really grateful for all the help and stuff. Couldn’t do it for a nicer guy." 

The contractors who worked on this project “sacrificed a day’s worth of pay,” reported Fox2Detroit. Owens Corning’s Roof Deployment Project has helped more than 350 military families and veterans since 2016.  

Don, was extremely grateful, saying, “Man, this is awesome. Couldn’t ask for a better Thanksgiving, really. It’s really a great thing!"
