Dexter Gray Jr. had been having issues with his roof for the last few years. The Army veteran from Elyria, Ohio served from 1967-1969 including time spent in Vietnam. He said that his roof was leaking so bad that water had been collecting in his basement and had even damaged his breaker box. Now, thanks to a new roof donation from the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, Dexter does not have to worry about water getting into his home anymore.
Since its inception in 2016, The Roof Deployment Project has donated new roofs to over 300 veterans across the country. This project in particular was done in partnership with Purple Heart Homes, an organization that also provides housing solutions for veterans. When Dexter learned about the project from his VA outpatient clinic, he contacted them right away.
Dexter has lived in his home since 2003 and while it’s a nice place, it’s amassed a lot of wear and tear over the years. “It’s a blessing,” he told The Morning Journal. “I’ve been in this house for 18 years, and we need a lot of work done.”
Franciscus Roofing, an Owens Corning platinum roofing contractor, installed the free roof for the veteran and was more than happy to provide the donation. Owner Tom Schlund told The Morning Journal, “It’s fantastic to be able to lend a hand. We’re blessed to be a strong company, so it’s important for us to give back.”
Owens Corning provided the materials free of charge and Franciscus Roofing supplied the labor. Patrick Main, a senior area sales manager from Owens Corning, said that they only provide the best contractors for projects like these.
“We only partner with our platinum contractors for these projects,” Patrick told The Morning Journal. “It is important for us to find a way to pay it forward for veterans who served honorably.”
