Bill, a homeowner from Washington state, is getting their home ready to be re-roofed and wanted to check about a specific product and whether it needs to be added to their roof during the project. They asked:
Our roof is 24 years old with an addition that is 14 years old. The addition has a section of roof with a 2 in 12 pitch. It does have an ice and water shield. The house has what were called 25 architectural shingles at that time. Now we are re-roofing the entire house. Do I use another ice and water shield on that flatter roof section when RE-ROOFING over Architectural shingles? The current roof is good with no leaks.
One of the AskARoofer experts, Lori Swanson, owner of Guardian Roofing and Gutters, had this to say in response:
Ice and water shield should installed on the 2/12 (low slope) roof area directly on top of wood sheathing but under the shingles. It's usually applied to areas like eaves, valleys, rake edges and overhangs, which are prone to ice dams and wind-driven rain. It's also applied around pipe boots, vents and chimneys and skylights as extra protection where flashings overlap.
