One of the most common and visible solutions to creating sustainable energy are solar panels because, in addition to having short- and long-term energy and economic benefits, they are versatile and adaptable. In this episode of the AskARoofer Podcast, Megan Ellsworth and Lauren White sit down with Mohammed Abdalla, a solar energy expert and the CEO of Good Faith Energy, to talk about integrating solar into your life and roof.
Mohammed has been working in the solar sector with Good Faith for a decade now. He shared a bit of where they sit in the industry, saying, “We are a leader in distributed solar roofing, battery backup solutions based here in Dallas, Fort Worth. We have a great vertically integrated company that does everything from design, build, service and everything in between.” One of the spaces they started in was working with Tesla installing things like EV chargers and, eventually, battery backup systems (like the Tesla Powerwall 2). It just snowballed from there, according to Mohammed, “We installed our first Tesla Solar Roof in end of 2019, early 2020.”
The Tesla Solar Roof system is very unique. Not only does it generate solar power, which saves you money in electrical bills and can qualify you for tax credits, it also stores energy to provide a built-in back up power system. In addition to the solar and energy capabilities, the Tesla Solar Roof is also a durable, long-lasting option. Mohammed explained, “It can be best compared to installing a luxury style roof like tile or slate, having premium solar components within that roofing material and then coupling it with a backup battery system or a generator to give your home backup power whenever there's a power outage. So a beautiful roof designed to withstand very significant storms and last a very, very long time.”
Mohammed and his team at Good Faith were the first installers of these systems in Texas and have gotten to watch the popularity of solar roofs rise over time. One of the things that can cause people to pause before installing solar on their roof is how it will look, especially if they are working with homeowners' associations or other governing bodies. But the Tesla Solar Roof bridges this concern. Mohammed explained, “One of the primary differentiators between traditional solar panels and Tesla Solar Roof is that the Tesla Solar Roof is a fully integrated roofing and solar product. It uses what is a called a BIPV, or building-integrated photovoltaics. The building materials have solar cells embedded within them, so you can't really tell the difference between the roof and the solar cell itself.” The incredible thing about this technology is that it does not sacrifice any power generation for a more cohesive appearance!
