Sustainable Products Win This Company More Than One Kind of Green

Malarkey’s sustainability makes it a prized acquisition for other green brands looking to lead the industry in performance and sustainability. 

At Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) show Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with Malarkey Roofing Product’s Rene Williams to discuss what is new with Malarkey and their sustainable initiatives. 

Holcim recently acquired Malarkey. “It’s business as usual, moving forward,” says Rene. “They really love the whole sustainability behind Malarkey's vision, and it's right in line with what they specialize in." Both companies are aligned in believing that they can lead the industry by being uncompromising with their commitment to sustainability and performance. 

Malarkey Roofing Products developed the industry’s first smog-reducing shingle by incorporating 3M smog-reducing granules.  

They also add upcycled rubber and plastic polymers from used tires and water bottles to help extend shingle life and improve the shingle's resilience and strength, creating an incredibly durable material that will last through extreme weather conditions like enhanced wind, rain and impact. 

By recycling these products, Malarkey has created an environmentally friendly shingle design improved by the technology inherent in the product. This innovative design upcycles used tires and post-consumer hard plastics to improve Malarkey products.   

“We are really mindful in the way that we are producing our shingles to get them in the market. It's been really amazing to spread that education around it,” says Rene. “It's like planting two trees for every 30 squares of roofing, so it’s pretty amazing.” 

Not only do Malarkey shingles offer carbon offsets and cleaner air, Malarkey reports that each roof saves the equivalent of about five rubber tires and 2,000 plastic water bottles from sitting idly in a landfill or entering the ocean. 

Malarkey offers green solutions built into our everyday life. “Malarkey is one of the most innovative shingle manufacturers in our industry,” says Rene. “They are light years ahead of the other manufacturers as far as what they offer in the industry and what they're doing and the way they manufacture.”
