If you’re needing to replace your roof, choosing metal is the most eco-friendly and environmentally conscious way to go. Hear why on a new episode of the AskARoofer Podcast!

Implementing green infrastructure into your home isn’t just limited to composting and having a greenhouse anymore. There are numerous environmentally conscious additions you can make to your home and those can start at the roof. On a new episode of the AskARoofer Podcast, Megan Ellsworth and Lauren White sat down with Renee Ramey of the Metal Roofing Alliance, to discuss some of the positive environmental impacts of installing a metal roof.

One of the sustainable aspects of a metal roof is that a very high percentage of the roofing material is made of recyclable materials. When the roof reaches the end of its life, instead of ending up in a landfill, that material is 100% recyclable. Renee says, “That's having an impact on the fact that we're not putting more into landfills, that we're able to reuse that material again, and again, and again. There's no end to the recyclability of that product, of that material.”

Even when you do have to replace that roof, a metal roof won’t need to be replaced for 50+ years as opposed to other materials, like asphalt, that need to be replaced every 12-15 years. “A quality metal roof that's going on a home, if you're buying from a quality manufacturer member, a quality product, and you're having it quality installed, you should get 40, 50 plus years easily out of that roof just with bare maintenance. Not a lot required typically,” Renee shares.

In addition to its long lifecycle, a metal roof also helps your home’s energy efficiency by insulating your home in the winter and reflecting UV rays in the warmer months. Renee explains, “Part of sustainability as well, from our perspective is the fact that it helps lower heating and cooling costs. That's a lower drag on our power grids, if you will, and what we're drawing power from.” So not only can you save money on maintaining your roof throughout the life of your metal roof, but you can save on your power bill too.
