Bruce Suggs, a Chicago native, served six years of active duty in the Air Force before receiving an honorable discharge in 1993. After returning to his hometown, he continued to serve his community by working for and eventually retiring from the sheriff's department. Bruce’s family includes his wife, two daughters and a granddaughter named Jenisis, who was diagnosed with leukemia. Amidst the emotional and physical demands of supporting his family through this difficult time, Bruce was also confronted with significant issues at home, particularly severe roof damage that required immediate attention.
Facing these multiple challenges, Bruce sought assistance and reached out to Habitat for Humanity, hoping to find support for his damaged roof. Judy, a dedicated worker with Habitat for Humanity, responded quickly and began searching for resources that could help Bruce. Judy found the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, a project launched to honor veterans and their families by providing them with new roofs. This project partners with various roofing companies, including Total Roofing and Construction Inc., which has already provided around four roofs to veterans in need.
Judy connected Bruce with this resource, leading to a collaboration between Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs and Total Roofing and Construction Inc. The support from these organizations provided Bruce with the much-needed relief and allowed him to focus more on his granddaughter’s recovery. With the new roof in place, Bruce’s home now offers a safer and more comfortable environment for Jenisis as she undergoes her chemotherapy treatments.
Bruce, a humble and passionate veteran, shared with the Lansing Journal that he is thankful for the opportunity provided by these collaborations. The new roof has not only alleviated a significant burden but also created a secure and supportive space for his granddaughter during her challenging time. Words cannot fully express how much this gesture has meant to Bruce and his family, highlighting the profound impact of community support and service.
