In this episode of the AskARoofer podcast, hosts Megan Ellsworth and Lauren White discuss the increasing popularity of metal roofing with Renee Ramey, executive director of the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA). With over 26 years in the construction industry, Renee brings a wealth of knowledge to the discussion, explaining why metal roofing is gaining traction among homeowners.
Ramey expresses that while asphalt roofing has long dominated the market, metal roofs are slowly but surely capturing more attention. "Every year we see it grow," she notes, attributing the steady rise to increased awareness of metal roofing's numerous benefits. She acknowledges that the journey to widespread adoption is challenging, particularly against the "giant that is asphalt roofing," but remains optimistic about metal's future in residential construction.
So, why are more homeowners choosing metal? Renee outlines several compelling reasons, starting with durability. A quality metal roof can last 40 to 50 years or more, making it a "one and done" investment that significantly reduces long-term maintenance costs. Additionally, metal roofs offer superior protection against the elements — a critical consideration in an era marked by extreme weather events. Whether it's hurricanes, hailstorms or wildfires, metal roofing systems are designed to withstand harsh conditions, providing peace of mind for homeowners.
Another key factor driving the shift is energy efficiency. "If you install a quality metal roofing system, you're going to see an impact on your heating or cooling costs," Renee says, pointing out that metal roofs can serve as an ideal platform for solar panels. This synergy not only enhances energy savings but also adds value to the home, making metal roofing a smart choice for eco-conscious homeowners.
The versatility of metal roofing is also a significant draw. Renee dispels the myth that metal roofs are limited to industrial-looking designs, stating that they can mimic the appearance of other materials like wood shake, clay tile or even asphalt. She asserts, "From an aesthetics perspective, there's no reason you wouldn't want to go with a metal roof as well."
