On this episode of AskARoofer, hosts Megan Ellsworth and Lauren White discuss the advantages of metal roofing with Erik Trefzger, the general manager of Orca Roofing LLC. From durability to energy efficiency, Erik explains why metal roofing is not just a trend but a practical choice for homeowners.
"The lifetime cost is actually lower than asphalt shingles because it is a lifetime product, as opposed to 20-year roofs," Erik says. Stating that while the initial investment is higher, the longevity and low maintenance costs of metal roofs make them a cost-effective option over time.
Erik expresses the aesthetic appeal of metal roofing, noting that it fits various architectural styles and offers a modern, high-end look. "We install a lot of standing seam metal. We think it's a great option for a wide variety of roofs. It really goes well with a lot of different architectural styles," he says.
Maintenance is another significant advantage. "The maintenance required is minimal. It doesn't have all of those little granules that asphalt shingle roofs have that allow for moss growth and other things," Erik explains. He advises homeowners to keep tree branches trimmed and use a soft cleaner for occasional cleaning to maintain the roof's appearance.
Erik also addresses the performance of metal roofs in various climates. "In coastal areas, the Kynar finish on metal roofs provides excellent protection against saltwater corrosion, ensuring the roof's longevity," he says. In regions with hailstorms, metal roofs offer superior durability, significantly reducing the risk of damage compared to other roofing materials.
For homeowners concerned about the initial cost, Erik suggests considering the long-term benefits. " Most standing seam metal roofs are Energy Star-certified, so oftentimes, you see them called out by architects or roofing consultants, especially if you need a lead certification or another architectural energy-efficient certification," he states. " They're a great option there, or even for someone who just cares about the energy efficiency of their home."

About Orca Roofing
Orca Roofing & Exteriors' owners and husband-wife duo Erik Trefzger and Jessica Motais de Narbonne have experience in almost every stage of the home construction process. They’ve owned and operated Orca Homes, a to-the-studs remodeling company, since 2011 (and that’s not to mention the house-painting business Erik owned in college). After doing it all in their previous and existing businesses, the idea for Orca Roofing & Exteriors actually emerged from necessity; Erik and Jessica hired and worked with several roofers for their Orca Homes remodels, but couldn’t find one that offered the level of quality or customer service they needed. So, they made their own.
