Karen Asked, "I am considering three quotes for my roof replacement – the main roof has a 9:12 pitch. All the bidders use Timberline shingles and 3- ft ice and water shield at eaves. One uses #15 felt underlayment on balance of roof, one uses GAF Shingle Mate, and the third does not use because he says that underlayment is not necessary on 9:12 pitch. What is the best choice?"
I personally like #30 felt. The thicker the better for re-roofs with all the traffic on a remodel project, it can take a beating.
The Shingle-Mate® is a glass re-inforced and reduces wrinkles. This is important since wrinkled felt stand up the shingles off the deck and is visually unpleasant looking. The rolls are lighter and can be rolled swiftly in colder weather. It comes in four sq. rolls and meets all the standard ratings for construction.
I would never install an asphalt roof without some type of underlayment.
So to answer your question I would use the Shingle-Mate®
