Larry Asks, "I have a single-story home in Southern CA. when the roof heats up the attic makes a loud cracking noise."
(You know the sound. You're Laying the in bed and you hear that noise from the attic like a creak or crack of wood.)
"This noise can be constant throughout the day into the evening. Ventilation for the attic is two 12×12 gable vents on each end of the home. Some soffits but very few. Insulation is 6″ Batts. I have been told to increase ventilation in the attic. Getting info on-line recommends; adding more gable vents, adding a couple of Whirlybirds, adding vents, and increasing insulation to R-30. What would you recommend to get rid of this cracking noise from the attic?"
Expansion and contraction will cause the movement of framing members. I believe the ventilation you have is less than what is needed for your square footage of living space. I am more concerned with that much noise you are hearing. I would advise seeking an inspection from a local structural engineer. An attic inspection may produce a shortcoming in construction. Most roofers have a specialist for this available. A call to one of them would be strongly recommended.
The description you have given about the attic means some attention is needed. An increase of insulation to R-38 would be helpful for comfort inside the home but a better ventilation system is a must. Seeking a local licensed roofing contractor who understands attic ventilation would be a good idea. This may reduce the expansion and contraction of the framing members that are causing all the noise. To the right is a photo of a skip sheathed roof that has had the shakes removed. Notice all the framing. It is not uncommon to hear the pop and creak out of these boards when they are expanding and contracting because of heat and cooling swings.
