Mark McMillian and Mike Vaughn tell AskARoofer that the key to a headache-free process of managing storm damage aftermath is having a reputable contractor on your side.

As homeowners, we rarely think about what to do after a storm hits our home until we are dealing with the aftermath of it. In most emergency situations, we have learned how to manage everything but our roofs. With storm season happening across the country and more people seeing roof damage from rain or hailstorms, having a plan when it comes to storm damage on your home is more important now than ever.

Luckily, we have an expert guide who can walk you through what to do when your home gets hit by a storm. In a recent podcast, Mike Vaughn from DaVinci Roofscapes and Mark McMillan of Horn Brothers Roofing share how to find a reputable roofing contractor.

Both Mike and Mark tell us that, often, the first step is to either contact your contractor or call your insurance company. You can also see if there is a roofing association where you live and find a contractor through them.

“That’s a great resource, because you know the roofers have already been vetted because they're members of an association that holds them to certain standards,” Mark says. He recommends contacting your contractor and having them meet with the adjuster, so that you can have two sets of eyes on the roof and get an honest opinion on the damage.

Mike also suggests contacting a contractor for an inspection first, as they will be your best friend throughout this process because they have so much expertise. “They can walk the homeowner through each process and then to the point where they can start the claim form. They can meet the adjuster out there and walk the roof with them. They can be there for every process that goes through,” says Mike. “Having an honest, reputable contractor on your side can save so much time and also heartache.”

Finding the right contractor to help you through this process is key. You want to find a contractor that will really stand in your corner and help guide you through the insurance and repair process, which is why trust is so important.

“I think the number one thing that you can do is rely on family and friend referrals, people that have actually used them before,” says Mark. “Referrals are probably the best way to find someone that's reputable and very solid company.”
