When putting on a new on top of an existing roof can you use inch and a quarter nails? Or do you need inch and a half nails?

Below is what AskARoofer roofing expert Fernando Torres with Antis Roofing & Waterproofing had to say in response to your question:

“It really depends on the existing system. One of the factors would be the thickness of the roof deck. Larger nails will be the most adequate to ensure said nail goes through the new shingle, existing shingle underneath, and roof deck.”
