It can be tempting to see small wear on a roof, such as missing shingles, as something that can be pushed until later. But there are good reasons to take care of it sooner rather than later.

When it comes to maintaining a home, there are constantly different factors competing for attention. It might be an HVAC unit that is acting up one day and changing air filters or cleaning a gutter after a storm the next. Overall, it is easy to forget some maintenance routines, such as checking for missing shingles on a roof. But routinely checking on the health of your roof  is more important than it might first seem.

Any damage to a roof makes it weaker and the building beneath it less secure. This can appear in various forms, such as water leaks and animals entering the home through broken down areas. A missing shingle can easily become a costly and time-consuming issue if it is ignored. The experts at Janney Roofing have collected some of the major reasons why missing shingles are a bigger deal than one might think.

1 – Leaks

A roof protects the home from the weather elements, and when all the shingles are in place, they flush the water in the roofline. The waterproof membrane under the shingles keeps rainwater from ponding on the roof, but it doesn’t prevent leaks entirely. When there are multiple shingles missing, it increases the chances of water leaking into the home and ruining furniture and other possessions. It’s important to have a roof inspected by a professional company to prevent a leak before it happens.

2 – Energy loss

A roof acts as a reflector of the sun’s UV rays. If shingles are missing or even damaged, the heat will penetrate into the home’s attic and upper floors, kicking the A/C unit into high gear to keep up with the thermostat. In turn, the system works harder, costing more money on the energy bill at the end of the month and wearing it out faster.

3 – Property value

When it comes to purchasing a house, potential buyers tend to judge a house by its cover, including the roof. If someone is interested in buying a property, they will not want to take on expensive repairs, especially if the repair is long overdue. There's only one first impression, and a few missing shingles can leave a bad one, lowering the property value of the home and preventing a timely transaction.

4 – Unwanted visitors

Unwanted guests are just another reason missing shingles can cause chaos in a home. Without shingles, it makes it easy for water to collect, which weakens the roof’s entire structure. This creates an opportunity and space for annoying visitors to enter the home.
