Here you are, hoping to “pick the mind” of a reliable roofer. We’ve got you covered. In our “Contractor Insights” feature this month we’re featuring Austin Bettin, Partner in Premier Systems Inc. out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. An experienced roofer, Austin is here to answer key questions every homeowner has when contemplating a roof replacement project.
Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?
A: Start by getting documentation that the roofing contractor is licensed and insured. Next, find out how long the company has been in business. You’re looking for a firm that’s not too “green” and knows what they’re doing on homes like yours. Finally, find out specifically what type of warranty the company offers for both the roofing system that’s being installed by their roofing team AND the product warranty offered by the manufacturers of the products.
Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?
A: Composite roofing is the “best of the best.” It’s Class 4 impact resistant and Class A fire rated. Both of which many insurance companies recommend when installing a new roof. Those same insurance companies will possibly offer discounts on your yearly premiums when you choose a composite roof.
Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?
A: I try to make sure to set the right expectations with homeowners. First, we’re dealing with a deconstruction process, so there may be nails and debris around. We work through that inconvenience to make sure it’s minimal for the homeowner. And, at the end of the process, we try and leave the property cleaner than when we started. So, homeowners should just have to focus on the end results.
Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?
A: If you have damage that requires working with an insurance adjuster, then you need a contractor who is experienced in storm damage claims. Look for a roofing contractor who is knowledgeable on working with insurance claims and knows different types of roofing systems from start to finish. There are many extra steps when working with an insurance adjuster. You want a roofer who is comfortable working with the adjuster from the initial scheduling right through the final invoicing.
Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?
A: DaVinci is a great company to partner with as a contractor. Their products and warranties are among the best in the roofing industry and we only want to offer the best to our customers. Very importantly, the aesthetics of DaVinci roof products can drastically enhance the curb appeal and value of a home for our customers.
