Michigan isn’t just known for their beautiful Great Lakes shorelines and being the lighthouse capital of the world. Being closer to the Candian border, the winters are cold and fierce. In Highland Park, a single mother and her daughter struggled to stay warm in their century-old home.
Eliana Evans and her daughter have been living in a home that has been family owned for the last 50 years. Being 107 years old, the building was in need of repairs. The roof was notably the worse project to tackle, having multiple holes throughout and clearly falling apart.
That’s when Rehab Highland Park, a non-profit organization, swooped in to save the day. Michael Locke of Complete Home and Building Maintenance said, “This was a major job with lots of repairs.” Rehab Highland Park rallied local businesses and were able to help raise ten thousand dollars in donations to get this project started. Adding to the list of donations, GAF donated shingles and ABC Supply donated the rest of the supplies needed.
"Materials alone probably would have been like maybe 12, 15,000 plus labor. Probably would have been looking at a good 25-30 thousand for her to get a new roof like this," said Jeffrey Owens with ABC.
"She really deserved this roof,” said Michael. “Right before the holidays and her and her daughter, they can enjoy it and relax and think about some other stuff besides it."
Maurice Turner with Rehab Highland Park mentions to Fox 2 News that the comradery and support from the community is what makes projects like this possible. "ABC, Complete Home Building and Maintenance are all willing to continue this work in the community, and we're calling on more people," Maurice said. "We have a future to build here and that is what we're working on right now.”
