Bob, a homeowner in Colorado, wanted to know if it was a good idea to have his gutters replaced when his roof was getting replaced, asking:
When replacing a roof, is it best to also replace the gutters at the same time? Do gutters need to be replaced?
Below is what our roofing expert, John Stout with Go Roof Tune Up™, had to say in response:
It is not necessary to replace gutters at the time of installation of a new roof. The life of the gutters is determined by the quality of the gutters and the abuse they have suffered.
If you have “built in” gutters (in other words, the gutters are installed within the fascia and starter board) at the time the roof is removed to install the new roof is an excellent time to replace the gutters if an inspection shows signs of deterioration. Generally, the gutters will outlive the roof.
If the gutters are conventional sheet metal with standard hangars, they can be replaced at any time quite easily. At the time of installing the new roof, the gutters can be inspected and repaired as necessary, or replaced.
Keep the gutters in mind as you do standard maintenance on your house. Keep the gutters clean and free of trash, leaves and debris. Paint the gutters as you paint the fascia with a good quality exterior paint. You will be rewarded with gutters that will give you many years of satisfactory service.
