When John Thomas’ roof was facing serious damage due to leaking, he had no idea how he would get it repaired. The leaking was coming through his ceiling and causing major damage to the structure of his home. John isn’t the only resident in Columbia, South Carolina who is facing these issues. Thanks to two nonprofit organizations, Home Works and Youth Corps, three homeowners got their homes repaired without having to pay a penny.
Home Works is a faith-based non-profit organization who provides home repair services to homeowners in need while mentoring youth in the process. The Youth Corps organization provides leadership training for high school students in South Carolina by giving them the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in different areas. The two organizations came together to make the home repairs, which included completely replacing John’s roof.
Over the course of a weekend, the two organizations had over 60 volunteers working to make the repairs. John Covert, Home Work’s volunteer project coordinator told News 19 WLTX, "We serve by providing new roofs, home repairs, but what we want people to really know is that we love them, we care about them and we’re here to help put them in a better situation.”
Home Works has been doing this kind of work for 25 years in Georgia and the Carolinas, working year-round to repair homes. With the help of students involved in the Youth Corps organization, the two organizations made quite the impact on the homeowners’ lives.
John no longer has to be concerned with his roof leaking or how he is going to repair it. “It was a big blessing. They did it for free and, if it had to come out of my pocket, I couldn’t afford it,” he told News 19 WLTX. “They came and repaired the whole thing.”
