Having served in the Army from 1969-87, Kevin Hughes, and his wife Kathy, are humbled to be the first recipients of a roof from Cape Fears’ Habitat for Humanity Veteran Build. The new roof is the result of several nonprofits and business working in tandem. Covenant Roofing and Construction Inc. donated the roof to Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity Veterans Build, as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. Owens Corning Foundation donated the roofing materials and Covenant Roofing and Construction Inc. donated the labor.
“It’s our honor to partner with Habitat For Humanity and Owens Corning to give peace of mind to these folks who have supported us and our country," said director of business development for Covenant Holdings, Stephany Connelly.
In a nationwide effort to honor veterans and the families who support them, The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project has donated over 250 military members new roofs. Work on Kevin’s roof is expected to finish by August, adding to an impressive number of veterans receiving a new roof through this program.
Kevin told the Wilmington StarNews he is amazed at how “people have donated money; they have donated time in the middle of a pandemic to take care of old veterans like me.”
Kevin and his wife currently live in a garage apartment. Their current home’s stairs have been hard on Kevin’s injured hips and knees. The new one level home will be far more accessible for them both, making their life much easier. Additionally, the extra bedrooms will provide his daughter and grandchildren a place to stay when they visit.
"I will have a house with my wife Kathy and I to live in that’s comfortable, new and won’t need any upkeep for probably most of my life, and all because other people cared and I can’t say thank you enough,” Kevin told Wilmington StarNews.
